At an elevation of 3,768 m (12,365 ft.), and with a prominence of 556.9 m (1,827 ft.), Monte Cevedale forms part of the Southern Rhaetian Alps. It is situated near the town of Sondrio, in the province of Sondrio, in Lombardy, Italy.
Monte Cevedale is among the highest three mountains in the Italian Stelvio National Park. It is not too complicated to climb, although mountaineers are likely to need glacier equipment to cross a crevassed glacier. Needless to say, surefootedness is a desirable asset.
Starting from the Gasthaus Enzian parking area, climbers proceed to Rifugio Corsi, a mountain hut along the southwestern Path No. 150, and then up to Rifugio Casati, another mountain hut, which marks the actual start of the ascent.
Next, visitors have to cross the glacier, on which there are remnants of World War I gun emplacements. An hour’s hike across rocky passages and ridges finally brings one to the summit.
There are a few other routes of varying difficulty, so it is wise to make local inquiries first, to identify the path that would be most suitable, based on one’s experience and physical condition.
The climb to Monte Cevedale under normal conditions is a rather easy glacier hike. However, one should not underestimate the hazards of moving ice, especially in glacial areas. Carry suitable equipment as advised by local guides.
There's a demanding alpine trail (T5) leading to the summit.
The nearest mountain hut is Bivacco Colombo located 1 573m/5 160ft S of the summit.
