At an elevation of 3,342 m (10,965 ft.), and with a prominence of 2,130 m (6,988 ft.), Punta Penia is the highest peak of the huge Marmolada ridge, also known as “The Queen of the Dolomites.” It is situated near the city of Trento, in the self-governed province of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtiro, Italy.
Punta Penia is a difficult mountain to climb. One needs to be an experienced climber equipped with regular mountain climbing equipment like crampons, ropes, and ice picks. The ascent is made easier by the availability of cable cars, and ladder rungs are driven into the rock faces in the steepest sections.
The “Via Ferrata Cresta Ovest della Marmolada” is a popular trail that dates back to 1903; it was used extensively during World War I. There is a cozy mountain hut on the summit where food and basic amenities are available. On the way up, food and other facilities can also be found in two transit huts called “Rifugio Pian dei Fiacconi” and “Rifugio Capanna Punta Penia.”
There's a demanding alpine trail (T5) leading to the summit.
The nearest mountain hut is Capanna Punta Penia located 34m/112ft SW of the summit.
