At an elevation of 3,599 m (11,808 ft.), and with a prominence of 143 m (469 ft.), Punta Pedranzini forms part of the Southern Rhaetian Alps. It is situated close to the town of Sondrio, in the province of Sondrio, in the region of Lombardy, Italy.
Punta Pedranzini is one of a group of 14 peaks. On reaching the Gavia Pass, one needs to follow the signs. There are two routes which start from San Matteo: one follows Path 25, and the other crosses the meadows past an old, abandoned hut. Here, the trail leads off to a glacier, which leads further to a drop of 200 m.
The trail then goes past (not over) the Friendship Bridge. After passing the glacier and climbing a steep moraine, a plateau is reached. The hiker then needs to follow the trail at a 40° incline in a wide arc, avoiding hidden crevasses. After traversing another plateau, the trail goes left up a steep ridge covered with loose rocks. The summit is at the top of this ridge.
