At an elevation of 3,022 m (9,915 ft.), and with a prominence of 127 m (417 ft.), Monte Gaviola forms part of the Southern Rhaetian Alps. It is situated close to the town of Brescia, in the Lombardy region of Italy.
Monte Gaviola is located above the Gavia Pass and is among the more accessible mountains to climb in the 3,000 m range. The route starts by going through the Gavia Pass, where there is adequate signage (installed during World War I) and some mule tracks that are well maintained. Although the access road from Santa Caterina is quite wide, the other from Ponte di Legno is quite narrow and allows only one vehicle to pass at a time.
Hikers need to drive up to the parking lot in front of Rifugio Bonetta, then set out on foot and follow the signs until the bridge is reached. From there, signboards along the way point in the direction of Monte Gaviola.
The climb is not very steep, but there are a series of hairpin bends. Hikers are advised to be cautious of loose rocks and debris from landslides.
Upon reaching the summit, visitors can enjoy the good views over Corno dei Tre Signori behind the Dosegù glacier, the Ortles Group with Zebrù and Gran Zebrù to the east, the Bernina Group, as well as Passo di Gavia and Monte Gavia to the west.
There's a hiking trail (T2) leading to the summit.
The nearest mountain hut is Rifugio Bonetta located 1 268m/4 160ft NW of the summit.
