At an elevation of 2,948 m (9,672 ft.), and with a prominence of 285 m (935 ft.), Pizzo Groppera forms part of the Western Rhaetian Alps. It is situated in the Municipality of Madesimo, in the Sondrio Province of Lombardy, Italy.
In 1979, a powerful transmitter was installed on the Groppera. Roger Schawinski was the mastermind behind this installation. It was done to ensure that Radio 24, a Swiss pirate radio station could broadcast to most of the Swiss territories. On the mountain, there is also a cableway station that connects to most of the resorts in the area.
The nearest mountain hut is Rifugio Chiavenna located 1 247m/4 093ft S of the summit.
