Grivola has had four previous names; Pic de Cogne, Grivolet, Bec de Grivola, and Aiguille de Grivola. The name 'Grivola' came to be in 1845, but there are many different ideas as to from where it originates. Giuseppe Giacosa indicates that it might come from the word 'griva' in Valdôtain, which means, 'song thrush.'
