At an elevation of 3,474 m (11,398 ft.), and with a prominence of 2,821 m (9,255 ft.), the dormant (extinct) volcano of Mount Gahinga, or otherwise known as “little pile of stones,” is situated in the Virunga Mountains on the border between Rwanda and Uganda. The Virunga Mountains is part of the Albertine Rift, which covers an area spanning over four countries – Burundi, the DRC, Tanzania, and Uganda.
A swampy caldera, 180 m wide, can be found on the peak of Mount Gahinga. Apart from being a dormant volcano, this Ultra mountain is home to the golden monkey and the endangered mountain gorilla.
Sister mountain, Mount Muhabura (Muhavura) is the 3rd highest of the eight mountains of the Virunga Range and is also an extinct volcano. It is located alongside Mount Gahinga.
