At an elevation of 627 m (2,057 ft.), and with a prominence of 162 m (531 ft.), visitors will find Cerro Negro (Black Hill), which is an active volcano located near the Village of Malpaisillo, in Nicaragua. The youngest volcano in Central America, it made its first appearance in April, 1850.
The name of the volcano comes from the fact that Cerro Negro has a telltale basaltic cinder cone. Visitors are allowed to visit this volcano via guided tours, providing a unique opportunity to witness an active volcano.
