North Macedonia is a country located on the Balkan Peninsula in southern Europe. It should not be confused with the regions of Macedonia and Thrace, as well as Epirus and Western Macedonia in neighboring Greece. The main natural feature of the country is that due to its location and relatively small size it ranks 7th among the 10 mountainous countries in the world with 85.5% of its territory covered by mountains, leaving behind the more famous Switzerland and Nepal, with Lebanon in between. In other words, in North Macedonia you do not need to look for mountains to go hiking, just leave your hotel. There are 5089 named mountains in North Macedonia. The highest and most prominent mountain is Mount Korab (2,764 m / 9,068 ft).
