Punta di Castellaccio

At an elevation of 3,028 m (9,934 ft.), and with a prominence of 70 m (230 ft.), Punta di Castellaccio forms part of the Southern Rhaetian Alps. It is situated close to the town of Brescia, in the province of Brescia, in the region of Lombardy, Italy.

Although not a steep mountain to climb, the final stretch needs equipment such as a 25-meter length of rope, a harness, and some lanyards.

The starting point is the Paradiso cable car station, where one can park one’s car. The route up the slopes leads to the Gorge of the Finger, where the higher of two ledges is to be climbed. At 2,700 m, there is an area of broken rocks, from where a disused military path leads to a pass between the two peaks. A short path then slopes to the summit, where there are a cross and a votive statuette.

While climbing Punta di Castellaccio, one can see remains from WW I battles, such as trenches, bullets, pellets, shards of grenades, rolls of barbed wire, and food cans.
