The Bulgarian Ranges is the common name for the mountains of Bulgaria, a country in Southern Europe. The three main features of the ranges are the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina), the largest of the several major ranges that make up the region, which stretches along the country's border with Serbia; the Rila Mountains, the highest due to Musala (2,925 m / 9,596 ft), which is also the most prominent mountain; and the Pirin Mountains with namesake Pirin National Park, a UNESCO site. The ranges also includes no less famous the Rhodope Mountains, Belasica, Bilo Mountains, Dervent Heights, Strandzha Mountains, Vitosha Mountains—the center of outdoor tourism near the capital city of Sofia, and several other minor ranges. In total, there are 4012 named mountains in the Bulgarian Ranges.
