Mount Säntis is the highest mountain in the Alpstein massif of northeastern Switzerland, with an elevation of 2,501.9 metres (8,208 ft) above sea level. It is also the culminating point of the whole Appenzell Alps, between Lake Walen and Lake Constance. Säntis is located in the Alpstein region, nearly 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) southwest of the town of Appenzell. Three cantons meet on Säntis: Appenzell Ausserrhoden , Appenzell Innerrhoden , and St. Gallen , the mountain being split between the municipalities of Hundwil , Schwende and Wildhaus-Alt St. Johann.
Mount Säntis offers a unique panoramic view over six countries(Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France, and Italy), Lake Constance and the Alps. The possibilities around the Säntis and Schwägalp are as limitless as the panoramic view. Visitors can enjoy one of the most beautiful natural settings in Europe, year-round events and special trips, Appenzell customs and cultural highlights.
Mount Säntis has a long history dating back to the 9th century. The name Säntis is an abbreviation of the Romansh language for Sambatinus (English: the one born on Saturday), which was thought to be the name of a nearby area.
There are several weather stations on Mount Säntis. One of them is located at the top of the mountain at an altitude of 2502 meters above sea level. The weather station on Mount Säntis was commissioned in autumn of 1882
The Säntis telecommunications tower, located in northeastern Switzerland, has been instrumented since May 2010 to measure currents associated with lightning striking it. The lightning current is measured at two different heights, 20 m and 67 m, using two sensors at each height.
Mount Säntis is also perfectly suited as a host for terrestrial communication devices. The cable car runs every 30 minutes from the Schwägalp Pass up to the Säntis summit, where two contemporary restaurants and an interactive experience center welcome around 400,000 visitors each year.
There's a trail leading to the summit.
The nearest mountain hut is Berggasthaus Alter Säntis located 139m/455ft E of the summit.
