At an elevation of 2,439 m (8,002 ft.), and with a prominence of 638m (2,093 ft.), Schwarzhorn, or Corno Nero, forms part of the Dolomites. It is situated in Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, in the province of South Tyrol, Italy.
Brothers, Schwarzhorn and Weißhorn are perfect examples of the scenic mountain beauty Italy has to offer. Schwarzhorn, (Corno Nero, which means, ‘black horn’), stands impressively tall next to his brother, Weißhorn (Corno Bianco), known as ‘white horn.’ Although Weißhorn is smaller in size, the taller Schwarzhorn often stands in the shadow of his brother, and is not as frequently climbed or hiked. Yet, hikers who have made the climb often report more scenic and varied views from their hike up the trail from Jochgrimm (Ochlini) that leads over the northern flank of the mountain, and then to the summit.
Nature lovers and photographers will enjoy the opportunity to capture two distinctly looking mountain peaks next to one another, as the Schwarzhorn peak is black in color, while Weißhorn showcases a white peak.
NORTH ACCESS: The best route to access Schwarzhorn would be via the Val d’Ega (Eggental) Valley, or from Regglberg. Start your trek early morning to ensure you have enough time to really enjoy the scenic views. From the Ochlini (Jochgrimm) pass, there is a well-marked trail that goes through the hills, up north to the summit. The hike takes about 1-hour to complete.
SOUTH ACCESS: Should you wish to access Schwarzhorn from the south, take trail 582 from the Oclini Pass (Jochgrimm). It takes about 1.5 hours to the summit trough partly rocky terrain.
There's a trail leading to the summit.
The nearest mountain hut is Baita Pozzi located 1 433m/4 702ft ESE of the summit.
