Aspen Snowmass is one of more than 500 ski resorts in the US and one of more than 30 in Colorado. It is located in Pitkin County in the west-central part of the state on four mountains in the Elk Range of the larger Southern Rocky Mountains at an altitude between 2,473 and 3,813 m (8,113 and 12,509 ft) with a difference of 1,340 m (4,396 ft). It is one of the nearest ski resorts to Denver, the largest city of the state. The main feature of Aspen Snowmass ski resort is that it is the third biggest in the US with more than 220 km (138 mi) of slopes and more than 20 ski lifts in total. It is also distinguished by the fact it has historically attracted celebrities from the world of culture, professional sports, and others. You could call it the American version of Cortina d'Ampezzo or Madonna di Campiglio in Italy or St. Moritz in Switzerland. Skiing in Aspen Snowmass is not just great, but prestigious (and expensive). The resort is best suitable for intermediate and advanced skiers — most of its slopes are red and black in about equal proportions. For easy skiing, the resort is not the best option, as it has just more than 10 km (6 mi) of blue slopes — 10 times less. The most common type of ski lift is a chairlift. The Aspen Snowmass season is from late November to mid-April in general.
