At an elevation of 2,744 m (9,003 ft.), and with a prominence of 263 m (863 ft.), Paternkofel is a peak situated in the Sesto Dolomites, on the border of South Tyrol and the province of Belluno, Italy.
Since Paternkofel is on the border between Italy and Austria, it played a role during World War I. Tunnels were dug into the mountain containing the Paterno Gallery, which was then used to reach the summit.
It is a good place for sunrise watching as one can see remarkable colors on the Dolomites, known as the enrosadira effect.
There's an alpine trail (T4) called Innerkofler-De-Luca-Klettersteig leading to the summit. Monte Paterno is one of the 1 peaks along the Ferrata De Luca - Innerkofler Klettersteig.
The nearest mountain hut is Dreizinnenhütte - Rifugio Locatelli alle Tre Cime located 832m/2 729ft NW of the summit.
