Monte Massone is a mountain of the Pennine Alps in northwestern Italy with an elevation of 2,161 m (7,090 ft). It belongs to the water divide between Strona Valley (south) and Ossola Valley (north).
Monte Massone is one of the most popular hiking destinations of the low Ossola Valley with a spectacular view of Lago Maggiore and Lago di Orta. Due to its significant prominence, the summit offers panoramic views of numerous four-thousanders including the second-highest in the Alps Monte Rosa massif.
There are several hiking trails that lead to Monte Massone’s summit. All of them are quite strenuous hikes (but not technically difficult) due to significant elevation gain (more than 1000 m). The most frequented trails start from Alpe Quaggione (4 hours, 1130m of elevation gain, 8km one way) and Luzzogno (4h 30minutes, 1500m of elevation gain, 6.5km one way).
The best time to hike Monte Massone is from May to October when the weather is warm and sunny.
The nearest mountain hut is Rifugio Renato Brusa Perona located 1,890m/6,200ft east of the summit.
There's a hiking trail (T2) leading to the summit.
The nearest mountain hut is Rifugio Renato Brusa Perona located 1 890m/6 200ft E of the summit.
