Val Thorens (Les 3 Vallées) is one of more than 250 ski resorts in France. It is located in the Upper Savoy department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in the Vanoise Massif in the larger Graian Alps range of the Western Alps. It is the nearest ski resort to the towns of Grenoble and Chambery. The main feature of Val Thorens (Les 3 Vallées) ski resort is that it is the biggest of the seven resorts making the Les 3 Vallées ski area, which in turn is the largest in France and the world with more than 600 km of connected slopes (other six resorts are Les Menuires, Méribel, Courchevel, Brides-les-Bains, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, and Orelle). In particular, Val Thorens has more than 130 km (mi) of slopes and more than 30 ski lifts in total. The Les 3 Vallées altitude is between 1,100 and 3,230 m with a difference of 2,130 m. The whole ski area is best suitable for easy and intermediate skiing — most of its slopes are blue and red. However, for advanced skiers, it has more than 79 km of black slopes. The most common type of ski lift is a chairlift but there also many T-bars and gondola lifs. The Val Thorens (Les 3 Vallées) season is from mid-November to early May in general.
