At an elevation of 5,240 m (17,192 ft.), and with a prominence of 3,040 m (9,974 ft.), Ultra mountain, Mount Lucania, was first ascended in 1937 and is the third highest mountain entirely located in Canada. It is known as a 14er, which is the terminology used in the USA to indicate a mountain with an elevation higher than 14,000 feet.
Mount Lucania was named in 1897 by Prince Luigi Amedeo, the Duke of the Abruzzi, after his ship, the RMS Lucania. The duke, born in 1873 was a Spanish explorer and avid mountaineer who ascended Mount Saint Elias in the Yukon, Alaska. Interestingly enough, the Duke never climbed Mount Lucania, but only saw it from afar. The first ascent of Mount Lucania took place in 1937 by Bradford Washburn and Robert Hicks bates.
