At an elevation of 2,849 m (9,347 ft.), and with a prominence of 794 m (2,605 ft.), Cerro Las Minas (Pico Celaque), part of the Cordillera de Celaque Mountain Range, is situated in the Lempira Department, Honduras.
In 1987, the Celaque National Park was established to encompass the mountain and surrounding areas of 266 km2. Slopes on the peak reach more than 60 degrees and are quite difficult to climb due to the rugged terrain.
The name ‘Celaque' comes from the Lenga language, ‘Caja de agueas,' which means, ‘box of water.' Lenca was a local language but is now extinct.
Visitors can expect to see ocelots (wildcat), the endangered plethodontid salamander, Bolitoglossa celaque (celaque climbing salamander), and pumas in the area.
There's a trail leading to the summit.
