Mount Bombalai (Bombalai Hill) with its 300 m wide volcanic crater on the south has an elevation of 531 m (1,742 ft.) and a prominence of 199 m (652 ft.). It forms part of the volcanic field on the Semporna Peninsula in the Tawau Division, Sabah state, northeastern Borneo in Malaysia.
The rock formation of Bombalai Hill has been dated to 67 million years old, while the extinct volcano itself last erupted about 11,650 years ago. Although, two young lava flows have been dated to 27,000 years ago, and flows nearly all the way to the coast. Interestingly enough, most locals don’t know about the extinct volcano’s existence on Mount Bombalai.
