Yala National Park is the most popular of the 26 national parks of Sri Lanka, an island nation in South Asia south of India, which is also located in the south of the island on the Indian Ocean coast. The main features of the park are its vast wetland flora and fauna with many unique species, starting with the Sri Lankan elephant. He is so important to the country that the most recognizable mountain in the park is named after him—Patanangala Rock or Elephant Rock (86 m / 282 ft), a low rock on the promontory, which really looks like an elephant from afar. There are 22 named mountains in Yala National Park. The highest and most prominent mountain is Walanda Hela (438 m / 1,437 ft).
